In the midst of all of this Ralph Lauren photoshop fiasco business, I thought it might be fun to get photoshopped.

It's amazing how different and disproportionate you can end up looking. No wonder women (and men) feel as though we cannot measure up.

With that said, I've included the before and after:

Here are some pre - production stills from the last picture I designed, The Frames (part one of a series) is a film based on a Korean ghost story. Directed by LS Mun of Notch Films. More fun stuff forthcoming!

Example of light and texture near the window cut outs... A mix of palate wood and new lumber to give a disjointed, distressed and uneven look. Awaiting aging and gray wash:

TAC 25 Collective Documentary
vegas
[info]andreacapere
The TAC 25 Collective is a group of artists of various mediums that have taken up Tacoma, WA as their cooperative live/work space in a recovered building. It's residents are community oriented, talent-oozing, and art-crazed.

What they are trying to accomplish is truly inspiring, and being from Tacoma myself, I find this sort of thing to be sorely needed. Tacoma's blue collar population makes this all the more heartfelt. I wanted to express my appreciation for their work and mission by getting the word out there about them. I'm truly thankful for the opportunity afforded me for documenting this phase of it's development.

Here is a three minute sneak peak of what I've been working on for the past few days. The audio isn't normalized, the color correction hasn't been done, and I've only just finished my EDL and slapped together three minutes for a sneak peak of what I shot on Wednesday.

Being as I work at a public access television station, these two articles from the Moving Image Source/Museum of the Moving Image really interested me:

I'll be directing a film I wrote this summer. Last night I was talking to my DP, and she mentioned a thing called Mumblecore.

It's so weird to be part of an art movement and not even realize that this is your influence in what you create. Here's a video for you to take a look at:

The Hot Dog Cycle

The Hot Dog Cycle, directed by Morgan Dusatko is a surreal, somewhat dark indie comedy of which I worked as art director.

"[I]t's a story of self-loathing and possible redemption, getting tripped up by blind desire and lack of self-confidence. Then when the answer presents itself, the long patterns of self-pity and hatred prove too difficult to overcome, at least for the protagonist."

Here's the trailer:

A Great Night:

The Hot Dog Cycle was great. What a fantastic team of people. We had a viewing at the Youngstown Cultural Center and then followed up with an after party at Morgan's. Brad deep-fried anything he could get his hands on and toward the end of the evening we followed up with recording some commentary for the DVD.

This picture was so great because it is so representative of a great summer, with new friends and my first few months at SCAN. So if I'm a little biased, it's for good reason.

The stop motion titling in the beginning and the sound was awesome. I was surprised, but so thankful to get front and back crediting for my role as art director. If you are going to STIFF this year, you have to see it.

Now I'm off to talk shop with some folks about a show. The weather is fantastic, too!

CNN asks ethical questions, but do we have ethical answers?
robot
[info]andreacapere
This whole story is sad. This woman now has fourteen children, assuming all eight survive (all but one are breathing on their own, but must be fed with donated breast milk). They all live in her parent's house.

The mental capacity to make a competent decision regarding the lives of her children is questioned by M. Sara Posenthal:

Rosenthal, on the other hand, questions the woman's capacity to make a good decision under the circumstances. "Some neonatologists believe that when pregnant women are told about dangers of prematurity or have great expectations about giving birth, their judgment can be impaired," she said.

"The situation raises the issue of whether a doctor ought to override a patient's wishes for the sake of saving lives," she said. "Although the health care system in America gives patients autonomy in making decisions about their own bodies, when emotionally distraught, some people decide poorly," she said.

The words that infuriate me the most, are the remarks of Robert George, a Professor at Princeton University and member of the US Presidents Bioethics Council:

"The babies didn't put themselves there; it's not their fault," George said. "There does seem to be a serious ethical question about killing one or more of them, even for the sake of maternal health."

Nevermind the previously mentioned irresponsibility of the technicians who may have implanted so many embryos in the first place, or the fact that her life is secondary even considering the risk associated with delivery.

You can read the entire unfortunate article here at Octuplets: Eight times the ethical questions by Elizabeth Landau.

Reclaimed Materials and Hot Grits
robot
[info]andreacapere
This week is a big week for the set design and carpentry for Hot Grits. I'm working on getting some of the last set pieces and accessories together and I've begun shopping for supplies.

The manufactured set pieces are fairly simple and modular, and will take about two days to build. I can't give anything away at this point, but rumor has it Nirvana once sat on the couch will be using on stage. Really, you should come see the play yourselves. It opens on Friday, October 24th at 7:00pm, and runs through November 8th.

I'm working with mostly reclaimed materials I've come across from the Habitat for Humanity Home Improvement Outlet. It's cheaper than buying retail, and it leaves me feeling fuzzy as well as lending a extra Good-Karma Boost(tm) to any production I work on. I highly recommend it.

Anyone interested in helping with the carpentry for Hot Grits set this Sunday/Monday? You will be paid in pizza, and (likely) free admission to the show.

SCAN TV thinks that one person's trash is another's treasure. That's why we're looking for your lightly used furniture, decor, and other potential set pieces.

Wouldn't it be neat to see that desk you can't fit in your home on TV? Furniture deserves it's fifteen minutes, too.

SCAN and Hot Grits update...

[info]andreacapere
I've mostly been busy at work with these promos (just finished shooting the last on Sunday!). Now it's on to shit-tons of editing. I'm also rebuilding our myspace page, and it seems I'll be doing set design for SCAN as well as the last gigs I've had. I might be able to get a decent amount of work doing set design and art direction, it seems.

I've also been attempting to kick into gear for Hot Grits. I realize the damn show is only two weeks away, and I haven't built a damn thing. I just asked for the check to be cut though, and that should make shit real in my head. I wrote my bio, too:

Andrea Capere is the Set Designer for Hot Grits and was the Art Director on the films The Hot Dog Cycle and The Shunned House, the trailer of which premiered at the HP Lovecraft Festival in Portland, Oregon. She is also the Director for Leap Second Pictures and her short film The Madcap Adventures of Professor Cogsworth screened at Norwescon in March 2008.

You bitches best come and see it. Unless of course you work or are seriously ill. Lord knows I've missed some pretty important events in my friend's lives because of those reasons.
